In the stream of time
High above Zell am See and Kaprun an unparalleled world of water, rock and electricity awaits you.
The lakes dammed up in Kaprun Valley in the post-war period are considered a wonder of technology until this day. The two Alpine reservoirs tower high above Kaprun, on clear days you can even catch sight of the Steinernes Meer in Saalfelden. Especially during snow melt in spring, when the two reservoirs are well filled and the turbines run at full blast, electricity for the entire region is generated here. During the summer months you can visit and marvel at this wonder world of technology.
The dam wall at Mooserboden is 107 m high and almost 500 m long. It stretches all across the valley and can be seen from far below. The view on this structure is particularly impressive, as you can even see Lake Zell. The reservoirs are only accessible by bus or inclined lift. During the trip up and when exploring the reservoirs a free multimedia guide provides historic backgrounds and explains the synergy between nature and technology as well as the legend Kaprun in audio book quality.
You disembark at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres and are then already in the highlands. Here you now have many options. Set off on a hike along the reservoirs or scale a summit of the Hohe Tauern. But beware: Be on time to be sure not to miss the last bus. Interested in a guided tour of the dam wall? Then explore the interior of the mighty structures and learn lots of interesting facts about the construction, operation and maintenance of the concrete giants, which hold the masses of water in their dam lakes. In the exhibition "Adventure world electricity" you’ll learn many interesting facts about the the interaction between glacier, power plant construction and electricity generation. Two water exhibits demonstrate the workings of the storage power plant through pumping and damming of water as well as activation of various turbines.
