Experiencing snow & winter away from the pistes

Winter hiking & Snowshoeing

The world is magic when looked at from children’s eyes. We can still vividly remember the fascination of seeing our breath in the cold winter air for the first time. These days, that is reason enough for many to not even leave the house in the first place. A minor crime, we believe, considering how fabulous our Upper Pinzgau looks in the icy winter months.

Winter hiking-tours

Be it along Salzach River or in the mountains of the national park – Winter hiking, apart from being wonderfully beautiful, is one thing above all: cold. But without warm clothes, sturdy shoes and hot tea we wouldn’t set off anyway. That would be quite stupid with temperatures around the freezing point. But leaving the warm creature comforts of home behind to set off into the great outdoors will certainly be rewarded – even if sometimes the sun may not shine. Naturally, the blue winter sky and sparkling snowfields are very beautiful indeed. So this makes dancing when the snow falls and catching snowflakes with your tongue even more fun.

Snowshoe-tours

As with skiing, the lure of deep snow when winter hiking is often stronger than that of the groomed pistes. But as in winter more caution is called for when hiking than in summer, the motto is: Either you keep to the signposted trails, or join a guided tour. Because in Upper Pinzgau you’ll find plenty of both and safety comes first as we know. Who wants to have their holidays spoiled by an avalanche? Every now and again, it’s worth taking a break from the pistes and toboggan runs. With snowshoes or completely without any heavy equipment, the tranquillity of Hohe Tauern National Park can be enjoyed to the fullest. As always when out and about away from the pistes, keep in mind: A qualified guide is indispensable if you are not familiar with the region. Conveniently, guided snowshoe hikes are also among our specialities in Upper Pinzgau. This way, exploring our national park valleys is sure to become a unique experience.
