Cycling & Biking in Mittersill - Hollersbach - Stuhlfelden
If cycling is what you like best, then the Tauern Cycle Trail is sure to be just the ticket for you.
The cross-border tour starts in Krimml, so in Salzburger Land then, where you can experience the natural force of the Krimml Waterfalls up close.
The trail then leads through Upper Pinzgau and eventually into the City of Salzburg. From there it leads into Innviertel in Upper Austria. On your way to the final destination of Passau, you’ll keep crossing the border to Germany time and again.
The Tauern Cycle Trail has a distance of 310 kilometres and during the ride you’ll negotiate some 750 metres difference in altitude. Most of the route is sealed, making for amazing riding enjoyment and comfort.
Thanks to this the trail is also ideal for families. And don’t worry, the route is signposted throughout so you’ll always stay right on track.
The Tauern Cycle Trail is signposted throughout. At the start it branches off to the left from the main road right behind the railway station and leads along Krimmler Ache River.
Then follows a three-kilometre-long gentle climb, taking you past the Krimml Waterfalls.
Here you’ll cycle along a gravelled cycle path, leading back to Vorderkrimmel and just before the railway station you’ll cross a mountain stream. Here you have to turn off to the right from the cycle trail and the trail then continues along the main road. After some 1.5 kilometres continue past a camping site on the right and at the end of a settlement turn off to the left. After this the Tauern Cycle Trail leads past an idyllic forest. Then the trail joins the main road again and continues all the way to Wald. Having arrived in Wald, make your way to the railway station and just before the warehouse turn off to the left, and then continue straight on for some 500 metres. Here the new cycle trail leads into Rosental Valley. Then cross Salzbach River and continue through Obersulzbachtal Valley. Shortly thereafter, the trail leads through a forest and then joins a gravel road in the district of "Sulzau". After the bridge turn to the right after 200 metres. Here you’ll see a B&B on the left and then pass below the state road. Then follow the village road to the market square of Neukirchen.
In Neukirchen follow the village road, past the church and cross below the state road. Then the Tauern Cycle Trail crosses the Salzach Bridge and leads through various meadows. Keep to the right at the fork that follows and the route then joins an unpaved meadow path. Shortly after, the trail becomes sealed again. After the Schönbach cross the stream and continue past the sawmill on the left. Here you can see the Weyer Ruins. Then the trail repeatedly passes across Salzach River and below the state road.
After some 100 metres turn off to the left and directly in Weyer continue on the right past the church. You’ll get to a camping site and then ride through a small commercial area. Turn off to the left from the state road and after 100 metres continue to the right. The route continues directly to Bramberg am Wildkogel. Starting from the village square ride along the state road here to the district of Mühlbach. Then follow the signs directly to Hollersbach. There, cross Hollersbach and after a right-hand bend folllow the Salzach River to Mittersill.
Starting at Mittersill town square head in direction of Felberstrasse. After a few bends cross below this road and continue cycling in direction of Felben. After a few metres, cross Salzach River once more and then head in direction of Stuhlfelden. Past Lichtenau Castle you’ll get to Pirtendorf. After this little village you have to turn to the left and then follow the course of the road for two kilometres all the way to Uttendorf. Before the bridge across the village stream turn off to the right and cross below the state road. The route now leads along Salzach River all the way to Lengdorf. After having crossed Salzach Bridge and arrived at the town of Niedernsill, turn off to the right and switch to the other side of the road at the bus stop. Shortly afterwards, the route turns off to the left and leads along the banks of the Salzach for some 800 metres. After crossing below the state road, cross another main road and the bridge across Kapruner Ache River. Then you’ll just have to turn off to the right and you’ll be in the centre of Kaprun.
The following route leads along the country road and you’ll get to Salzach Bridge. Here, all three route variants join up. If you continue riding straight on you’ll get directly to Zell am See. The official Tauern Cycle Trail runs along the south side of Salzach River. In order to get to Zell am See, you have to ride along Kapruner Strasse, the Pinzgau railway line running alongside. Cross below the state road and the tracks of Westbahn railway. At Porscheallee turn off to the left and cycle along the lakeside promenade, taking you directly into the town of Zell am See.
